Three people have died while two others are nursing serious injuries after they were involved in a road accident at Eastern bypass in Ruiru, Kiambu County. Among the three is an 11-year-old child.

In the 7:00 am accident which occurred today, October 30, 2022, a speeding vehicle rammed into a Tuk Tuk and a 14-seater matatu killing three occupants of the Tuk Tuk on the spot.

The driver identified as Cosmas Mutembei has since been arrested by police and is undergoing Alcoblow tests at Ruiru police station to help establish whether he was drunk driving.

In a video doing rounds on social media, Mutembei appears extremely intoxicated when he was caught by Kamakis residents after causing the accident.

Ruiru Sub-County Police Commander Cecilia Kemboi says the recklessly driven vehicle rolled over after ramming into the two vehicles.

"We have commenced investigations to establish how the accident occurred but preliminary investigations show that the driver recklessly rammed into two vehicles,”Kemboi stated.

In the wake of increased accidents along the newly expanded highway, Kemboi appealed to the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) to erect speed bumps along it to control motorists and avert further accidents.
